Public Sea Turtle Release

Public Sea Turtle Release Tour de Turtles July 19, 2019!

Do you know where a sea turtle goes after rehab? Join us on Friday, July 19th on Sombrero Beach at 10:00 a.m. for a very special public sea turtle release! St. Thomas, a juvenile green sea turtle will be fitted with a satellite transmitter as part of Tour de Turtles 2019 and released to the wild! You will be able to follow St. Thomas’ track online! St. Thomas was rescued in October, 2018, 3 miles offshore of Big Coppitt Key where he was found debilitated and covered in Fibropapilloma tumors. St. Thomas’ treatment at the Turtle Hospital included five tumor removal surgeries, broad spectrum antibiotics, anti-parasitic medications, vitamins, and a healthy diet of fish, squid and greens. St. Thomas is strong and tumor free! St. Thomas will be fitted with a small transmitter on Friday morning before heading to Sombrero Beach. He will arrive at the beach in the turtle ambulance at 9:30 a.m. and will be returned to his ocean home at 10:00 a.m. Please bring your family and friends and join in the fun of St. Thomas’ journey back to sea! After St. Thomas’ release, you can track his route online at http://www.tourdeturtles.org or follow the link at http://www.turtlehospital.org
