Public Sea Turtle Release of Papa

Join us for a very special public sea turtle release Thursday, July 21st at Sombrero Beach in Marathon! “Papa” an adult male loggerhead sea turtle rescued offshore of Marathon July 13th 2022, with the help of the USCG Marathon Station. Papa was inadvertently hooked by a recreational fisherman. Papa was treated at the Turtle Hospital for the fish hook wound.

Papa has been fitted with a satellite tag at the Turtle Hospital as part of Sea Turtle Conservancy’s Tour De Turtles program. Tour De Turtles is a fun, educational journey through science, research and geography of the sea turtle migration using satellite telemetry. After Papa returns to sea, the general public will be able to follow his journey online at http://www.tourdeturtles.org

Bring your friends and family on Thursday, July 21st to Sombrero Beach and celebrate Papa as he returns to sea! The Turtle Hospital ambulance will arrive with Papa at 7:45 a.m. and release will be promptly at 8:00 a.m. See you there!
