Just days before a Loggerhead sea turtle named Wham was rescued in The Dry Tortugas, Save-A-Turtle opened their new educational exhibit on Loggerhead sea turtles at the Park Headquarters office at Fort Jefferson in The Dry Tortugas National Park. Save-A-Turtle is a volunteer non-profit organization dedicated to the preservation and protection of rare and endangered marine turtles and to the enhancement of their habitats here in the Florida Keys and throughout the world.
The educational display was designed and crafted by Randall Bennett of Tall Grass Museums Services and was funded entirely through Save-A-Turtle memberships, t-shirt sales, adoptions and donations. The exhibit displays life-like hatchling Loggerhead sea turtles emerging from the nest and crossing the sandy beach to the water’s edge. A story panel gives general information and facts about the life of Loggerhead sea turtles.
The exhibit was opened to the public on Wednesday, August 19th 2009 and will be a permanent display at the park. While planning your next trip to the Florida Keys, we hope you take some time to visit The Turtle Hospital as well as the beautiful Dry Tortugas National Park and view this great exhibit.
