Do you know where a sea turtle goes after rehab? Join us on Friday, July 22nd on Sombrero Beach at 10:30 a.m. for a very special public sea turtle release!
Fleming, a juvenile green sea turtle will be released back to the wild, fitted with a satellite transmitter as part of Tour de Turtles 2016! You will be able to follow Fleming’s track online! Fleming was rescued in March, 2015 200 feet off of Fleming Key in Key West where a boat captain found him entangled in fishing line, tethered to a piece of pvc piping. A rehabilitation specialist picked Fleming up in the turtle ambulance and took Fleming to the Turtle Hospital for treatment. Fleming’s body and eyes were covered in Fibropapilloma tumors. Fleming’s treatment plan included five tumor removal surgeries, broad spectrum antibiotics, anti-parasitic medications, vitamins, and a healthy diet of squid and greens. Fleming is strong and tumor free! Fleming will be fitted with a small transmitter on Friday morning before heading to Sombrero Beach. Fleming will arrive at the beach in the turtle ambulance at 10:00 a.m. and will be released to his ocean home at 10:30 a.m. Please bring your family and friends and join in the fun of Fleming’s journey back to sea! After Fleming’s release, you can track his route online at http://www.tourdeturtles.org or follow the link at https://www.turtlehospital.org
