“Izsak” the Loggerhead sea turtle will be making his journey back to the ocean Saturday and the Turtle Hospital in Marathon is inviting the public out to wish him a safe journey. The 200 pound adult male turtle was rescued by FWC officers on April 2nd, two days after the closing of lobster season where he was discovered with a lobster trap line tightly wrapped around his rear flipper, anchored by a trap. Unfortunately, the flipper had to be amputated (much thanks to the Marathon Veterinarian Hospital) but after two months of antibiotics and squid breakfasts, “Izsak” has made a full recovery and his ready to go home to the ocean. This will be the first public release of a rehabilitated sea turtle in the middle Keys since “Johnny” the sea turtle, the young Loggerhead attacked by a machete that attracted hundreds of well wishers including Jack Hanna. The release will take place at Coco Plum Beach in Marathon at 11:00am, Saturday, May 30th. For details please call the Turtle Hospital at 305-743-2552.
