Pico is a sub-adult Green sea turtle found in the FPL St. Lucie power-plant intake canal on December 4th, 2006. Pico was covered in fibropapilloma tumors, the result of a herpes virus which afflicts sea turtles. Pico’s eyes were covered by the tumors, which eventually would cause him to starve if not removed. The picture above is Pico prior to surgery, so you can see the many tumors covering his body and face. Pico had surgery to remove the tumors here at the Turtle Hospital, and is now awaiting his release date which will be one year after his final surgery.
