Fleming was rescued in March, 2015 200 feet off of Fleming Key in Key West where a boat captain found her entangled in fishing line, tethered to a piece of pvc piping. A rehabilitation specialist picked Fleming up in the turtle ambulance and took Fleming to the Turtle Hospital for treatment. Fleming’s body and eyes were covered in Fibropapilloma tumors. Fleming’s treatment plan included five tumor removal surgeries, broad spectrum antibiotics, anti-parasitic medications, vitamins, and a healthy diet of squid and greens. Fleming was released with a tracking tag on July 22 as part of the Tour De Turtles race! You can follow her journey at www.tourdeturtles.org Started in 2008, the Tour de Turtles is a fun, educational journey through the science, research and geography of sea turtle migration using satellite telemetry. Created by Sea Turtle Conservancy, with help from sponsors and partners, this event follows the marathon migration of sea turtles, representing different species, from their nesting beaches to their foraging grounds. Tour de Turtles will track individual sea turtles, for approximately three months, as they race to complete a “turtle” marathon. The Tour de Turtles competitors will swim with the goal of being the first turtle to swim the furthest distance during the migration marathon. Fleming has made it all the way to Cuba but Fleming has some tough competition to “win” the race. There is also a contest to win People’s Choice. If you would like to help Fleming to be the people’s choice winner, you can vote for Fleming at http://www.tourdeturtles.org/howyoucanhelp.php
