Addis, a 3.5 pound Kemp’s ridley sea turtle, was found entangled in marine debris, including a trap line, nylon rope, and balloon ribbons on April 20 by the McQuiston family. Addis was found just in time to prevent the loss of the flipper using exercise, massage, and cold laser therapy. The cold laser therapy performed by Dr. Geraldine Diethelm from Marathon Veterinary Hospital resulted in immediate reduction in swelling and improvement in circulation to the flipper. Thanks to Dr. Diethelm and the Turtle Hospital staff, Addis made a quick recovery and was released on June 23 by Richie Moretti, founder and chairman of The Turtle Hospital, in a bed of sargassum seaweed 12 miles south of Marathon.
