The Turtle Hospital participated in the Key West World Championship Powerboat Races via helicopter to ensure no sea turtles entered the track during the race. Each year, hundreds of visitors flock to Key West to watch the final races for the fastest boats in the world. Reaching speeds above 200 miles per hour, a driver would be unable to maneuver the boat around a sea turtle who swam in his path. To ensure the safety of sea turtles and marine mammals, Turtle Hospital director Richie Moretti teamed up with a helicopter pilot to check for sea creatures in and around the race track. Prior to each race Richie was able to fly the track and clear the area before the racers even started the engines.
No animals were harmed during the event.
