Thanks to Sandy Williams of Save-a-Turtle for bringing in these 9 Loggerhead hatchlings! Sandy excavated a nest this morning in Islamorada on Sea Oats Beach. The nest likely had around 100 eggs in it and all had crawled to sea except for these little runts that got left behind. The hatchlings were also tangled up in some roots and were looking too weak for the ocean just yet.
They will have a short stay with us just to give them a chance to get hydrated and have a few bites of squid since they have run out of energy. Then they’ll have a boat ride out to the Sargassum seaweed beds and on to the next part of their journey!
